seeing tz's fancy one ,has spurred me on to building mine . from the finest drill bit sharpening machine available at a nearby auto jumble for a tenner . car 002 by henri briggs, on Flickr add on the finest chinesium analogue counter as a turn counter , cant be bothered to need a power supply an use hall sensors like some posh types .an no need for a rpm meter ,its only 1 HP (henri-powered) ,so my dodgy elbow will indicate the rpm by how much my tennis elbow hurts . that's a good investment at only £10 as I understand it there are a few wire makers for the type of wire you are looking for I`ve heard that you want double insulated as one of the coatings is heat resistant and better for the more current hungry ignitions but single insulated would be ok for most ignitions
also look at bee keepers suppliers for the "brass frame wire ferrules" as these are the right diameter for the standard bobbins if replacing them

thanks for the good tips , an to be honest i didnt buy the sharperner with any intention of using it for anything , for a tenner it was destined for the mantlepiece . H

I like your approach as its a cheap option
here`s the expensive way of doing it
the winding machine is about £500
and the hand held guide is about £40

shirts 001 by henri briggs, on Flickr mounted on a base plate , an a coil carrier made from a cut off finger of stator laminates ,with a glued in bent pop rivet to be a lever/cam for counter . need to raise counter about a inch an secure so it works correctly . then make a wire guide an wire spool holder ,need to buy wire 1st so i can get size of spindle needed . when i 1st thought of this TZ i did look at prices of machines ,but way out of my budget for a experiment ,if i use it a lot i think i'll upgrade an copy your design ,with your permission of course .H

most people making guitar pickups just stand the spool of wire on the floor with the wire feeding vertically from the spool. this works very well ive wound a couple of ignition coils on the lathe with pugwash and we just guided the wire through finger and thumb nice to see your machine is coming along pugwash is the man who can tell you what wire to use and which is the best types
