Hi !
A new member is here to introduce his smallie-project and in need of some advice later.
I bought my -74 Primavera in fall 2011. It had been standing on a lawn next to a thrashbin without a roof over it for a couple years before I found it. It even had some kind of green algae growing on the water standing between the floor-runners. It was no surprise that the scoot wasn't in running condition and the previous owner said it had trouble with constant leak of fuel from the carb. Anyways, I was in love and bought the poor fella to a better home.
Later I disassembled the carb, cleaned everything up and threw in a new plug with fresh fuel. I have to admit I was kinda surprised that the old sod fired up happily after just these tricks.
Of course the engine had seen better days:
- Crank bearing had about 1.5mm play on flywheel side
- Gears, especially 2 & 3, were jumping off frequently
- Spray-can painted over original red color
- Light rust all over
- Regular dents and dings
Anyhow, I rode it for few months and this is how it looked like. Pretty much the same outlook as when I bought it.
I thought I'd just redo the engine and nothing else yet, but got a bit carried away. Soon the whole thing was in pieces.
Engine brought in for total overhaul
Frame had some dents straightened by local bodyshop and sandblasted afterwards. Other smaller parts were glass-bead blasted. In this picture the parts are masked off to be powdercoated.
After a while, I had some beautiful parts to take home with me
Also after a few steps the engine had new bearings, DR 130cc cylinder, cylinder cowl and a good transmission gears with new spider
I spent a few days and nights working on it ...
... and this is how it ended up looking
Threw in a Polini banana exhaust to replace the rusted out paper-thin original one
Got my black licence plate to better suit the style of the scoot (in Finland, only bikes from 1974 or older can get these, lucky me)
It would have been a horrible insult to bolt on a new EU-style plate like this to a scoot this proud of it's old age.
As you might have read, I pepped up the engine with DR 130cc, Vespatronic ignition kit and Polini banana in the process of overhaul. Some might say that it was a mistake to take the first step down that road, but I have no regrets. I drove the scoot for the rest of the year, but was already determined that it had to go at least 100km/h instead of bit over 80km/h it did with these small modifications.
In winter 2012 I got another engine as a package running 130cc cast-iron Polini, reed-intake welded to casings, Zirri silent exhaust, HP4 ignition, and 24mm Dellorto PHBL.
I've got to admit that the setup has been a bit letdown by my experience.
- I had to redo the bearings and take a better tranny from my first engine
- Zirri isn't a really great pipe for town cruising
- Reinforced clutch is dragging
- Replaced the HP4 ignition with my trusty Vespatronic just for peace of mind
Now I think it has an intake leak somewhere and I'd like to make an engine of my own. I've set my eyes on Parmakit 130cc Direct Intake cylinder and LTH Road exhaust. I'll propably need a new clutch too and already have a 20/20 full circle Mazzu in my garage.
