The handlebars are nice, the engine is sorta pokey, the dummy tank is cute, the seat is comfortable and the the narrower floor pan makes cornering very enjoyable. Other than that its like any other small frame IMHO.

i know where there are 2 ss90's they have been stored in a wet dark garage for the last 20 odd years so there's probably not an awful lot left of them

Tough shite, I hate wankers that "speculate to accumuliate" then forget to store things properly.
Fuck them and their investment.
I don't want any SS anyway, far too common a goal to aim for.
Wouldn't mind a 50 SR but I wouldn't chase one much, the thought of a a legit and straight 50 Sprinter gives me a semi though.

Sorry a 50SR - what is that? Sounds interesting (if not off topic but who cares!!)

My goal would be ultimately to acquare a 50 Special Revival, or even better, a Primavera ET3 from Japan ;D ...on that note, did anyone remember that Yellow smallframe that came up for sale in California, that was imported from Japan? Had stood for years and was still brand new! Absolutely mint! Think it was a 50-something or other!

Sorry a 50SR - what is that? Sounds interesting (if not off topic but who cares!!) German, and maybe other countries too, "high performance" model that used a 50 Special chassis with Primmy headset and a large finned tweaked barrel same as the PK FL.

The 90ss is unlike a 'normal' smallframe to ride. It turns quicker ,kind of drops into corners. They are uncomfortable (for me anyway) compared to my Et3. I wouldnt want to ride one long distance tbh. But i do feel like I am riding something special when I ride mine.

I've nothing against SS's, they're very pretty and I'm sure they handle lovely but the "Holy Grail" aspect along with the price means they're of no intrest to me. Fair play to the lads that bought them back in the 80's when they were worth a couple of hundred quid and a Sherbert dab but now?
Nah, I couldn't spend that on a van that I need for work nevermind a toy.

You're right the rarity has put a certain riding experience out of reach of most. I bought an SS90 in about 1987 off my old fella's work colleague. We drove out to Wolverhampton to have a look at this thing. My first scoot a (German) 50s had just been stolen so I was after a replacement. The 90ss was red and had a massive white wooden rear back box on. Other than a scratched side panel it was totally original. So none of us knowing what it was it changed hands for £60! We got it home and going. I rode it around Birmingham for a while less the massive wooden box which must have slowed it down cos it weighed a ton. By that time the 50s had turned up in a local stream. I got it back so I had the privilege of choice . There was a blemish on the legshield of the SS which I rubbed with T-cut so hard that the tan undercoat showed through . I had the seat recovered as it was perished and tried unsuccessfully to touch in the side panel . It didnt have the HRH badge on the front but I seem to think there was a blue RODAGIO sticker on the inside right legshield. Inside the dummy tank there was the original owners book (the pages were stuck together with mould). I asked someone to restore it but never saw either again! Norrie Kerr put a new exhaust on it about a year later (after I took it up to him with sluggish performance). I wouldnt let him buy it when he asked - he said it was nothing special but I knew he was pulling my leg (the old fox!). Eventually I sold it to a guy who ran a shop in the Midlands. He bugged me for it and made an offer I (thought) I couldnt refuse. Now we both know he got a bargain . I do remember that it was very quick and if you sat on the springs directly over the fuel cap it was comfortable enough . I remember it touched 70mph once returning home going down hill on the Wolverhampton Road late one night. Very impressed I was! You did worry about getting trapped by the dummy tank if you fell off and also about dinging the mudguard because you couldnt get them then. The best bit was flying round a corner with those little bars knowing that you werent going to get that kick up the arse when the stand grabbed the tarmac ;D. Which you do on the wider frames - >:(ouch Now I understand the frame was a bit shorter which would explain a thing or two. Sweet bikes in general . The reg was RFD 72F. Its probably moth balled somewhere under lock and key but it did have a life! I dont do the aspic thing - never felt I had the luxury - and you cant take it with you you know. Best to ride 'em til you or it drops - just dont crash in the meantime IMHO. ;D The 50SR sounds great. Thanks for the info Juan. Do you know of pictures?

Oh I see. Yeh that's cool. My 50s had those indicators which I always thought kind of kooky - they were the first thing to get knocked off when you first started out! Still have a couple of spares hanging about IIRC. I never really dug the plastic horn cast but in retrospect... BTW Have you thought about setting up permanent thread type sections for all the different small frame model types so info can be focused? Don't you think that would be good?
